Expect to be given every opportunity to develop further at work. There is a wide range of different ways in which your skills, knowledge and experience can be developed further. Here are just some of them:-
Appraisals enable both managers and employees to take an overall view of your work and assess your performance. They should provide a framework for you to improve and give you ideas on where to take your career next.
As part of the appraisal process each person gets their own personal development plan. The plan sets out any learning, training and development needs for the year and how they are going to be met.
Specialist and technical training is provided in specific areas that operate specialist equipment. This type of training focuses on the Health & Safety aspects of operating technical equipment.
This is where colleagues support you whilst you learn new tasks. It’s a great way of learning new skills fast.
For some roles your Council may fund professional and vocational training whilst you are working. You will also be given time off to attend the course and study leave to help prepare for exams. You may also be given a mentor to guide you through your study. NVQs are available to give you accreditation for learning whilst you work. There are also corporate programmes of training courses covering areas such as leadership skills, recruitment and selection, health and safety and equality and diversity, as well as short IT courses available on using the network and on specific applications.
Many Councils offer additional training opportunities, including skills for life, such as: numeracy and literacy; ICT skills; training on equality and diversity; skills to support competency frameworks; a range of management qualifications; and other job-specific training and development opportunities.
